This is a neighbor's riprap with waves pounding it.  The riprap is essential.

This is a neighbor's shoreline.  The sea is up to the trees. An increase in sea level of 2' will 
take out the trees and some of the shoreline. 

2 December 2009 ... all is tranquil
This neighbor's seawall may not be considered beautiful (although a mason thought it was)
BUT it saved this house in the storm of '78 when waves were breaking over the wall.
Although there is ledge at the shore and underneath, the house was built on gravel that had eroded
to within 1' of the corner of the house before the wall was put in.
Without the wall the house would have been lost without doubt -- a neighboring
shore house was lost.

Moral:  The homeowner must have the right to protect his property !
