The Winter Wind 2007

Magn -- fair winds and following seas
Magn (my mother) died April 5th in the nursing home.  She had been getting gradually weaker for about a month and then one afternoon just passed on without warning.  Cause? ... essentially old age ... she was 98 years old.  She had been wanting to die since she got into the nursing home ... and I don't blame her ... not because the care in the nursing home was insufficient but rather at that point her capabilities and options were just too limited.  Even so there were things Magn enjoyed:

Paula and I took Magn in her casket in the van down to the New Swedish Cemetery (now called All Faiths) in Worcester Mass to be laid to rest beside her husband Arthur and to be within 20 feet of all her old best friends that predeceased her.  Her intent was to resume their card games ... and now she is in position to do that.

Paul -- beautiful weather and bountiful harvests
Doc Paul Greenlee (Paula's father and a  surgeon and a farmer) died in 2005 at the age of 102.  As he requested his body has since been at his Alma Mater, the University of Pittsburgh Medical School.  His remains were returned this year and the Greater Greenlee family gathered under the Catalpa trees on top of the highest hill of his Pennsylvania farm on a clear July day to spread his ashes and say a final farewell ... a lovely place with long views.

Island Cottage
As usual I spent what time I could on the island ... mostly working on THE COTTAGE.  This year I put the windows in, trimmed, and shingled the West and most of the South sides.  I also built a deck linking the South side of the cottage to the shed and stairs down into the gulch and bolted the cottage to rock.  Of course I never finish as much as I hope the year before ... and age is slowing me down.  Next year I hope to finish the outside.  Many thanks to all that helped.

A little bird told me ...

The little bird

The bird flew inside the cottage through the open door and roosted, seemingly pooped from flying ... I gathered him up to put him outside and he just sat on my finger for a while, resting ... and in a few minutes flew on his way.

Come help with the cottage if you can !

Again the site has a 270 degree view  with great sunrises / sunsets.

Merry Christmas
(In decided contrast to last year at this time, when it was unusually warm, this December is unusually cold and snowy ... )

Adventures

Menu demo table at the Balsams

Paula and I made our an annual pilgrimage to The Balsams resort in Dixville Notch, NH for a little XC, snowshoeing, mild tele skiing, and heavy eating -- but I had a back problem and was consequently relegated to the cellar exercise room to burn off enough calories to justify attending the next meal.
We went to "Muggle Fest" to celebrate the publication of the last Harry Potter book and met Slytherins:

Note:  witch/wizards have red eyes; Potter supporters have bolt marks.

We visited Paula's Pennsylvania home for a wedding celebration of a nephew and the ash scattering for her father (see article to the left).

(Paula, brother, sisters ... all stewed)

We finally squeezed in a vacation and flew to Italy to hike in the Dolomites and visit a friend, Vicki, who lives near Venice.  After a look at Venice, visiting with Vicki,  and transportation we had only 5 days to hike -- 4 were rain low and (surprisingly early) snow high with little visibility, but the 5th day was perfect and made it all worth while.

Flying in over the Dolomites

I was desperate to see mountains after 4 days of rain and snow ... so when it cleared at about midnight at the end of the 4th day I tried to go outside BUT the refugio practice is to lock the doors at 10 PM ... so I was locked in and could not get out the door ... so desperate as I was I crawled out the high window in our room onto the snow covered roof just to get a glimpse of the mountains ... not knowing if I would see them again.  Paula wasn't willing to do that.  Luckily the next day was wonderfully clear.
   More pictures below.

For a different kind of adventure we drove to Paula's home in Pennsylvania for Christmas ... the visit was good, the people many and friendly, the food plentiful, the chores minimal, and the drive was long (13 hours).  The drive also let me have a good visit with my old hiking buddy Roger Coco (Daniel Boone incarnate) and his partner Nancy.  See Paula to the right in Roger's hat.

         Paula
is skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, biking, kayaking, rowing, traveling, working (alas), and of course trying and failing to keep Steve under her total control.

The daffodils came up along the granite wall to celebrate Spring:

Then the roses at the end of the Point flourished ... but attracted too many Japanese beetles resulting in their larvae eating all the roots of several thousand square feet of my lawn in the Fall ... so I think I will cut them down next year. Moral:  beauty comes at a high price ... perhaps that is why I am cheap ... on the other hand my being handy increases my value but unfortunately only to the elder set !

Note that this table on the front porch is now tied down to the deck underneath.  The high Winter winds sucked 2 previous tables up and over the railing and into the ocean ... venturi effect.  The first loss I thought was a fluke, the second was clearly not.  I learn slowly.

I enjoyed a visit from my former High School Math teacher and his daughter's family.  Mr. Levy selflessly helped many students over many years.

Paula, Sam, and I cited as "Collectors"
We bought a watercolor of Maine's Mount Katahdin as seen from Katahdin lake, "Autumn Radiance",  from a very talented artist that lives down the road.  We are pleasantly amused to be featured as "Collectors" in this picture on her website.  Usually I am only cited for parking infractions or other bad behavior.  Take a look at her paintings:  Evelyn Dunphy .  I have climbed Katahdin many times, including several in the Winter.  This painting reminds me of those and other adventures.

Steve notes:

I had a back problem that degenerated in 3 months so that I could only walk about 100 yards without my legs falling asleep and me having to sit down.  After considering my options I had back surgery to remove deposits in my spinal canal that were pressing on nerves and by May I was functional again.  Thank goodness ... I have too many things to carry to the cottage and trails to hike to be put in a rocking chair yet.  I am skiing again after losing last season.
Happily I am still gainfully unemployed and intending to stay so.  I have simplified  by selling off all apartment buildings.  With my mother and apartments gone I ONLY have to take care of Paula and Sam and the houses and cottage and the To-Do List.  Actually that is still a bigger job than I can manage at my slowing rate of progress ... but I try.

That's all Folks, take care ... and enjoy ...
