The Winter Wind 2008

Island Cottage
As usual I spent what time I could on the island ... mostly working on THE COTTAGE.  This year I finished putting in all the windows and putting on the nearly infinite amount of shingles ... so the outside is essentially DONE.  Next year I hope to put a storeroom under the bedroom, put in the composting toilet, and work on the inside.  Maybe I will put up railings on the decks and thereby save some lives.  Many many thanks to all that helped.

Come help with the cottage if you can !

Again the site has a 270 degree view  with great sunrises / sunsets.

Sam

is leading a dogs life:  sleeping, going for a walk, napping, sometimes to the island, sniffing, napping, eating, sleeping ...

Sam likes the Pellet Stove insert

Sam often watches the flame in the pellet stove.  Actually, Paula and I also like the stove flickering away ... even if heating oil isn't at $5 / gallon any more.  This pellet stove has been working very well.

Sam burrows to bottom of sleeping bag on cold Autumn morning

Sam went on his first cold weather overnight camping trip and after sleeping out for most of the night decided that the bottom of a sleeping bag was the place to be -- way at the bottom.

Merry Christmas
(This December is fairly average ... some cold and snow ... )
Happy New Year

Adventures

Most of our adventures were in Maine this year:  one winter trip to a backwoods camp at Katahdin Lake near Mount Katahdin, one winter trip to several old sporting camps north of Greenville, a weekend trip to Monhegan Island, and a hiking / boat trip to Greenville / Katahdin areas in the Fall.  Cold weather was the motif but we had fun.

Moosehead Lake steamer Katahdin

There was only one trip by the Katahdin up the full length of Moosehead Lake this year and we took it.  Man was it cold that Oct 4 day ... but it was foliage time.  We were amongst the few that stayed outside on deck ... most were huddled inside only occasionally peering out of a window.  We needed full winter gear.

is skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, biking, kayaking, rowing, traveling, working (alas), and of course trying and failing to keep Steve under her total control.

Cheapskate Steve dressed for $5/gal heating oil ... (before the pellet stove and drop in oil prices) -- this means that the house temperature was close to 50 degrees ... now the house is toasty.

Steve notes:

My back is doing well so I can haul stuff to the island and hike.  One knee is limiting the number of consecutive downhill tele ski runs that I can do to about 5.  So Olympic dreams are crushed but the basics are good.
