The Winter Wind 2009

Island Cottage
As usual I spent what time I could on the island ... mostly working on THE COTTAGE.  This year I put railings around all the decks in the hope of saving some lives and constructed about 65% of a storeroom under the bedroom.  I have to finish the storeroom so I can move all the tools in there so I can finish the inside.  June and July were very rainy and little work got done.  Also, other home projects took time.  Next year I hope to finish the storeroom, put in the composting toilet, and work on the inside.  Many many thanks to all that helped.

My fish is BIGGER than your fish !!!
Ocean Sunfish near Wood Island was 5' x 5' ... this guy was HUGE !
Although this is not my picture, it was a thrill to see and Touch a 2500 pound creature like this.  It was lolling in the sun on the surface (hence name = sunfish).  Its skin was very rough; it needs to use more corn husker lotion.  We spotted it shortly after leaving Wood Island on the way home and coasted over next to it.  It didn't mind us at all.  We could have lassoed it and towed it home ... but what would we do with it then?

Adventures

For shared adventures we enjoyed some skiing at The Balsams in  far northern New Hampshire (picturesque, historical, and great food), XC skied and snowshoed at Moosehead Lake,  a weekend trip to Monhegan Island in celebration of a kayak buddy that died, a 6 day canoe trip down the West Branch of the Penobscot (in Maine) to Lake Chesuncook (camping except for the last day when we stayed at an Inn), and a foliage tour through NH and VT to my old boyhood hometown of Brattleboro, VT (a back to the roots thing).

         Paula
is skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, biking, kayaking, rowing, traveling, working (alas), and of course trying and failing to keep Steve under her total control ... though sometimes in her attempt to do so ... she loses it !.

We stopped to do this hike on the way back from Brattleboro, VT.  This hike was very unusual because there were about 1000 hikers on the mountain (a beautiful Columbus Day) ... all ages, all nationalities, many different languages.  The crowd was in some ways encouraging because it was a polyglot with a huge variety of people ... not just the usual scruffy folks like me.

Redone dock with additional float for Paula's boats ... I built it ... August

To build Paula's new float I had to apply to the Army Corps of Engineers, 5 indian Tribes (including the Aroostook Band of MicMac Indians), and the Maine Historical Preservation Commission ... luckily after several months I got approval.  It was Paula's Christmas present.
