The Winter Wind 2011

Island Cottage

Because of other projects at the mainland house at Fosters Point and Alaska travel, I did not get to spend as much time at the island as I would have liked.  But I still got a little done ... such as putting in a composting toilet (with a water interface ... hence no flies will zoom up your wahzoo while you are concentrating /  contemplating).  I still think the two 5 gallon bucket systems I had been using was just fine ... let alone having the ultimate virtue of no expense.  But as usual I was outvoted by Paula who stated  this was a necessity ... and then ...  GLARED at me (you know that look ... it means "Defy me and you Die ... you have to sleep sometime").

Many thanks to those that helped with island projects.

We enjoyed Vancouver ... particularly since more hurricane force winds and rain forced us to cancel our plans to visit Victoria and Whistler.  It is a very scenic and modern city on the ocean and close to the mountains.

Merry Christmas
(This December features abnormally mild weather.  We had a little snow but it quickly melted ---  as of 12/21/2011 )

Adventures

Our primary adventure was a trip to Alaska 7-28 September.  We spent most of the first 2 weeks with Anchorage friend Vicki exploring by land and car.  We headed for Talkeetna and a flight around Denali.  Then we headed for Denali Park for a few days and took the bus all the way in (~90 miles).  We saw grizzly, moose, sheep, etc.  Then we took the Denali Highway (mostly gravel) across back country to Valdez and eventually a ferry to Whittier before heading back to Anchorage.  Then we went to Seward to take a ship South for a week to Vancouver.

Needless to say it was an adventure ... Unfortunately the weather was often drizzle and clouds, but we had fun anyways.  The ship did not leave port for 2 days because of hurricane force winds in the Gulf of Alaska and when it left on the 3rd day the seas were 25-30' still with hurricane force winds and the outside decks were sealed off and the ship was pounding enough to knock some off their feet.  Periodically the Captain would come on the public address system and encourage us to stay where we were!

         Paula

has been visiting family a lot this year.  Her adventures were slowed down for a while by a hip replacement operation in April. That went very well and recovery is about complete.

Working for a living has upset Paula since she had to start working for a living.  In order to take enough time off to visit family and go to Alaska, Paula had to quit her job, go on her travels, and then hope that she could get work when she got back.  Luckily she is in a field that provides that flexibility ... at least for now.  So she is reluctantly back at work.

My Creative Side:  Masterpiece Returned

Circa ~ 1970

This bikini was the pinnacle of my crocheting career.  I made this for my friend Sue about 40 years ago.  Now she is in Alaska where a swimmer needs more protection ... and hence she with great regret but with respect and reverence for the artist ... has returned the bikini to its maker.

Paula adamantly refuses to model the suit.  Hence Bear (to the left) is doing his best to show its potential (inadequate though that is).

It is good to see my finest work again ...

I am willing  to share this work of art with the public.   I suppose I will have to choose a museum to donate it to (but I will hold out until one will build a new wing to house it).

I learned to crochet at an early age from my friend Ed.  He taught me to crochet hats.  Another friend's birthday was coming up and I thought I would crochet her a hat ... then I thought "How Boring!" ... then I thought "Why not a Bra!" ... after all a bra is just 2 hats and a few strings ... then I thought "Why not a Bikini!" ... a bottom is just 2 triangles and a few strings.  Then I thought "don't be drab ... use color!"  ... It just goes to show:  You always got to think!

Just to be different (which I was) ... I would often crochet in the front row of Physics Department Colloquia ... since I was also captain of the University Karate Team, no one said a disparaging word ...

And so it came to be:  My Masterpiece.  ... I never crocheted again.

P.S. I am soliciting models for this bikini with a better figure than Bear ... how about you ?  Pictures will premier in next year's WinterWind.

Around the House

Paula wanted more raised beds (she always wants more raised beds to plant more stuff) ... so to cure her of this tendency ... I made many more, namely  9.  Her job was to fill them with dirt.  I figured this labor would stop her for asking for any more raised beds forever.  However, she , as usual, out foxed me and invited friends to come for a work weekend and fill them for her ...

I hope these are enough raised beds for Paula ....

I decided that I needed a lightning rod on the house.  I came to this conclusion because I had to cut down a big tree that towered over the house (because of rot).  Hence I lost whatever  protection the tree allowed.  Also, I already effectively had a lightning rod on the house ... a state regulation requires a stainless steel pipe liner for the chimney with a protruding cap ... that led straight to the pellet stove in the living room.  I thought it would be best if the lightning went to ground via a different path.  Also, a lady that grew up in the house remembered that during a lightning storm (before the big tree had grown up) the chimney had been struck and sparks flew from the chimney everywhere.  So I got my old climbing equipment out from the closet and rappelled off of the chimney and ran the 1/2" copper cables down from the rod I installed in 2 separated directions and grounded them.  Paula was not amused to see me dangling around the roof.  Since then wise folks have told me that old climbing equipment in a closet should stay in a closet ... an old person taking it out of the closet (let alone using it) is clear evidence of rampant dementia.

Finally ...
the Dock is completed

I have been working for 3 years on the dock project.  It took about 1.5 years to get through the permitting process and about 1.5 years of working with the contractor to get the job done.  It was finally completed at the end of June.  I did some work on the project in order to get it done the way I wanted (which means if I wanted something that took a lot more time than normal, I did it).  All the heavy lifting was done by the contractor (thank goodness!).

The granite blocks are all ~2'x2' by 8-12'.  All together they weigh about 40 odd tons.  Two sides of the blocks were cut by a stone saw so they would be flat and parallel.  The other sides were rough split.

It turned out very well.  The pier head is level within 1/16" over 50 feet (its best to be lucky).  Good Job by Falls Point Marine of Freeport and Carter Becker and crew.
